Thank You, THANK YOU, Mr. Hickey and Mr. Roy!!!

Mr. Hickey, Jeffrey's Dad, volunteered in our morning classroom on Thursday to carve the pumpkin.

Mr. Roy, Maggie's Dad, volunteered in our afternoon classroom on Thursday to carve the pumpkin.

The AM Rascals donned Mr. Hickey the most "FANG"tastic Pumpkin Carver ever!!!!

The afternoon class all named Mr. Roy the most "BOO"tiful Pumpkin Sculptor ever!!!

Graphing fun builds math skills in counting and comparing.  We counted the number of happy, funny and scary faces in each group and compared:  biggest, fewest, greater than, less than and equal to.  Most Rascals in both the AM and PM Sessions wanted Pumpkin Carvers, Mr. Hickey and Mr. Roy to carve a happy face like Toto in the "Wizard of Oz".  Challenge Word Problem:  How many more happy faces than funny?  Scary?

More on comparing....We predicted the weight of the pumpkin.  Then we weighed the pumpkin on Mrs. Rich's scale.  Was the Rascal guess more, less, or the same as the weight of the pumpkin?  Ask your kinder....

Measurement skills (too long, too short, just right) were reinforced by predicting which size string (red, black, orange) would measure the circumference of the pumpkin.  We recorded what we learned about counting, comparing and measuring in our book entitled, All Around the Pumpkin.

Feeling the inside of the pumpkin elicited a lot of language from each Rascal.  Amazing describing words were voiced:  soft, gooey, mushy, etc.  As a result of this overflow of language, pumpkin talk is the topic for Writing Workshop this week.  Samples of journal writing and illustrations by your favorite kinder will be posted on our class blog next week.  Stay tuned....
