Hello Rascal Families,
The week began on Monday with a visit from a professional photogragher. The Rascals were dressed to the nines! I couldn't resist recruiting someone from the Professional Photo Crew to take a group picture with my camera. The Rascals are GOOD-LOOKERS, don't you agree?
Root, Root, Root for your kindergartner! We have learned so much! Do you believe we will complete Unit 2 of the Imagine It series at the end of October? This unit has focused on letter names~Nn-Zz, handwriting, rhyming words, identifying patterns, counting words in sentences, opposites, sight words and word order. Comprehension is a BIG part of this section, too. Students had lots of practice retelling a story, naming characters, making predictions and sequencing story events. Recognizing sight words is an ongoing objective. Yes, we will continue to reinforce all of these skills. In just thirty-three school days, we have come a long way!!!!
Learning is happening, no doubt about it! During our Literacy Block next week kinders will enjoy reading two more Pre-Decodable books entitled, Shapes and Animal Tracks. The new sight words I and see will be introduced. Notice that the newly introduced sight words are stapled to the inside of the front book cover of Shapes and Animal Tracks. The sight words are listed in the weekly books your child brings home. Our October goal is to be able to read the following 10 sight words introduced by the end of Unit 2:
a – the – and – go – had – he – I – see – has – you.
Speaking of books, My Pumpkin Book is a seasonal classic. This is a book your child will complete as part of the pumpkin carving event. I’m saving them to display during Literacy Week in the Spring. These books demonstrate some math and science skills we’ve been studying. Ask us about it! Be ready to hear about our favorite Pumpkin-Carvers coming to our classroom…Mr. Hickey and Mr. Roy!!! They’re TOP seed in our book!
We are showing consistent growth in math. Board games have helped us get better at counting and reading numbers 1-10. The Rascals have enjoyed playing in pairs while working collaboratively. They spin to get a number, say that number and move that number of spaces on the gameboard. I smile proudly when I hear one say to their partner, "You may go first". I love the way they shake hands at the end of the game and tell each other how fun it is to play. Social skills are developing nicely.
It is hard to believe that October will soon be behind us! A celebration is in the plans! On Wednesday, October 31, the kinders will participate in a School-wide Harvest Festival. Students in both sessions will be involved in activities such as relay races, dancing, mural painting and face painting. We will enjoy a snack of popcorn and apple juice, provided by the PTA. (Therefore, NO snack from home is needed on Wednesday!) If you would like to volunteer please let me know. We especially need volunteers during the morning session. Lots of fun will be enjoyed by ALL!!!
Show and Tell on Monday is a preview of coming attractions in November. Rich’s Rascals are going to create a male gobbler for their Harvest Bulletin Board. It must be a sign of the times. Let’s use Dad’s/Uncle’s/Grandfather’s ugliest patterned necktie. (Guess what part of the gobbler these ties will be used for?) All ties for the male gobbler are due on Monday. Principal Bairstow already gave us his. I’ll send the family tie back home to you at the end of November, I promise.
Last, but not least, join me in welcoming our classroom volunteers. Do you believe we have a total of 20? Here is a photo of some of the AM volunteers who will be working with your children, Mrs. Pearl and me. We are ever so grateful to each and every one of you!
Have a “BOO”tiful Weekend!
June A. Rich
