Newsletter ~ October 11

Hello Rascal Families,

Picture Day is Monday, October 15. Ordering photos is optional. However, if you plan on ordering a photo package for your child, I am requesting picture envelope/money to be sent in no later than Friday, October 12. I collect the envelopes and check off names so that each family receives the package they want. In the past, this has eliminated “forgetful happenings” on Monday, the first day of the school week. Thank you!

We are happy to inform you that the Volunteer Program will begin the week of October 22nd. Both sessions have a parent volunteering every single day of the school week!!! Accolades to ALL classroom volunteers. The kinders and I agree that having you in our classroom throughout the school year is “good to the core”!

Today marks the 28th day of kindergarten and bragging is in order. As you know, we are working in Unit 2 of our Reading Series and are very proud of our accomplishments. Thus far, we’ve been introduced to 16 letters in the alphabet; letters Aa-Pp. We’re ready to show off what we’ve learned in the areas of capital and lower case letter identification, comprehension, rhyme, sight words and basic language concepts. Assessments are only a few of the many measures used to monitor progress in these areas. Of course, teacher observation and daily student performance are other important parts of the evaluation process. Your child’s progress will be discussed at our scheduled parent/teacher conference.

Lots of learning has been going on and we have the works to prove it. Math lessons this month have been on number concepts, shapes, graphing and patterning activities. I am extremely impressed with everyone’s improvement in identifying numbers, shapes and patterns!

This week’s Show and Tell spotlights Rich’s Rascals. It all started with our Pattern Parade on Tuesday.

Patterns continue to be the buzz word in our kindergarten classroom. The study of patterns has inspired us to create a Pattern Bulletin Board in our classroom.

For Show and Tell on Monday let’s bring in a photograph or a drawing of a pattern. (No bigger than 4” x 6”). Be ready to tell us all you know about your pattern. Write your name on your Show and Tell. It will be displayed on our bulletin board throughout the entire month.

Traditional Fall Activities are here to stay! THE BEST PUMPKIN SCULPTORS EVER, Mr. Hickey (Jeffrey’s Dad) and Mr. Roy (Maggie’s Dad) are coming into our classroom the week of October 22, to carve the pumpkin. Preparation work has been happening behind the scenes. One of the comprehension skills focused on in the Imagine It Reading Series is story character. Keeping that in mind, it makes sense to carve our class pumpkin into a character. Ask your child about our class character graph for the pumpkin carving event. All of us are turning into graphing experts!!!

In addition to teaching, I will be conferencing with parents. Parent/teacher conferences go hand in hand with teaching. I must confess that conferencing is another love of mine. I get to engage in a conversation with you and learn so much more about your child…our favorite subject! Thank you in advance for taking time from your busy schedule to confer with me.

Enjoy the weekend!
June A. Rich
