Newsletter ~ October 25

Hello Rascal Families,

Hip! HIP! HOORAY!!!  The Classroom Volunteers have joined our Kindergarten Family.  We've been keeping them busy preparing materials, working on bulletin boards, tutoring students on specific skills and assisting small groups during workshop.  Who do you think is having more fun, the Rascals or the Volunteer?

I am very proud to say that each and every kinder has shared their parent most willingly with classmates and teachers.  Look at the ear-to-ear smile..... Bragging is in order!!!

October happenings have been exciting indeed and it’s not over yet! THE BEST PUMPKIN SCULPTORS EVER, Mr. Hickey (Jeffrey’s Dad) and Mr. Roy (Maggie’s Dad) carved our class pumpkin today!  Ask your child about our class character graph.  Do you believe most kinders chose the happy character?  A favorite character from the Wizard of Oz…..Guess who?

The “Hullabaloo” of the month, the Fall Festival Celebration is on Wednesday!   Wear orange that day.  Some of the activities your child will be invited to participate in are:  face painting, mural painting, pumpkin rolling, apple cider relay, baseball and football tossing; in addition to singing and dancing.  Dress to be outdoors as many activities will take place on the playground (weather permitting).  Kindergartners are happy to “partner-up” with their classmates, other kindergartners and first and second graders.   We’re team players and we’re ready to prove it!

Family members have volunteered on Fall Festival Day; however, due to the variety of events and number of children participating, many more volunteers are needed.  Additional volunteers working on the scenes will result in more fun and more attention for your child.  Consider joining us.

Remember, party treats and drinks will be served at school, so don’t pack a snack on Wednesday.  All Fall Festival favors and goodies will be sent home on Wednesday, too.

Fun and academics go hand in hand.  Achievements multiply as we move right along in math and reading assignments.  Be on the look-out for our Counting and Number Books.  Ask us to identify and describe the following shapes:  circle, square, triangle, rectangle, hexagon, trapezoid and rhombus.  Amazing progress has been noted since September days.  Join me while I applaud for each and every kinder student!!!!

The 10 sight words introduced so far are:  a, the, and, go, had, he, I, see, has, you.  The Sight Word Assessment for these 10 words will be administered next week.  Continue practicing with your child so that s/he can read the words with automaticity.

During the past three weeks the children have been investigating patterns.  Lots of information has been collected while many questions were asked.  We shared what we learned by dressing ourselves in clothes with patterns and parading through other classrooms.  The following week, we brought in a favorite pattern for Show & Tell and displayed it on our Concept/Question Board.

Thank you for sending in the ugly patterned neckties for our Male Gobbler on our hall bulletin board.   Flocks of Underhill folks continue to strut by to take in the sights.  It makes a very handsome display, don't you agree?

Last in the pecking order is the addition of a female turkey.

For Show and Tell on Monday let’s decorate one paper feather with your favorite pattern.  It's a great way to culminate our reading unit on Patterns.  You may use crayons, markers, paints, collage materials, etc.  Create a beautiful patterned design to embellish our female turkey with. Yes, family members may help!  All paper feathers will be sent home today and are due back to school on Monday.   Remove it from your child’s folder and enjoy decorating it to be fancy, fancy!  Rich’s Rascals are going to have the best dressed female turkey; just wait and see!

Parent/Teacher Conference Day is for some of you on Friday, October 26th.  I will meet with you in the Office Conference Room.  Be prompt!  If you are late, unfortunately our conference time is shortened….  If something comes up on that day and you are unable to attend, please call the office (623-7233) and ask them to let me know.  I am so looking forward to meeting with each and every one of YOU!

                                                                                    Have    "BOO" tiful  Weekend!
                                                  June A. Rich
