Newsletter ~ May 16

Hello Rascal Families,

Did you hear the news?  We’re “bugging” out with ladybug activities since the ladybug larvae have arrived on Monday!  The larvae have been put in the Ladybug Land domes.

Two domes have been placed on each classroom table.  Rascal Entomologists have been observing the larvae.  At this point, they look like little alligators.  Eggs, larvae, pupae, adult ladybugs

and metamorphosis are the buzz words in kindergarten.  These words have become part of our everyday vocabulary.  Our goal is to see ladybugs on the side of the Ladybug Domes.  This whole process will take approximately 3 weeks.  Yes, we have earned the reputation of entomologists!!!

Do you believe we will start Unit 10 in the Imagine It Reading Series next week?  It is the last unit in the Kindergarten reading program.  What a milestone!!!  The focus of this unit is on Windy Days……perfect for the weather we’ve been having, don’t you think?    Long vowel instruction continues.  Next week we will review long vowel sounds, A, IO and U.  The final vowel taught in kindergarten, long vowel E will be introduced along with the last of the fifty sight words, be she.  The Sight Word Assessment for units 1-9 will be administered at the beginning of next week. Please prepare your child. I’ll send the results home by the end of next week….YAHOO!!!!!

SUBTRACTION is where it’s at in Math.  We’ve been practicing our newly formed subtraction skills.  First, we roll a die to figure out how many teeth to black out.

The Rascals love to blacken the monster’s teeth and write the matching subtraction equation.  This class-favorite activity is helping us reach our goal of memorizing subtraction facts from 5.  GO Rascals!!!!

Participation in the “Bear”y Special Child Program has resulted in life-long gains.

Show and Tell activities help develop good communication skills.

Speaking in front of a group increases confidence.

Sharing with classmates helps us learn to make connections between student responses.

Assessments season is here!  The final DIBELS Assessment will be administered on Thursday, May 30th.  We’ve been sharpening our reading skills throughout the year with endless support from you, Mom and Dad….THANK YOU!!!!   “Rascals, get your rest and show off what you know!!!”   Families are going to be very impressed with the results.  Rich’s Rascals have come a long way since 2012 days.  I predict the test scores will prove it!  All assessment scores will be sent home in June with your child’s report card.

The end of the year is packed with many joyful events.  The Kindergarten Team is in the process of confirming specific events, dates and times.   I’ll be sending a calendar home so that you’ll be aware of the end-of-the-year festivities.  Last day of school for PM kindergarten is Monday, June 24.  The last day of school for the morning kindergarten class will be on Tuesday, June 25th.

Think Ladybugs!!!
