Newsletter ~ April 11

Hello Rascal Families,

It’s hard to believe, but Spring Vacation is just one week away?  Where did the year go?  We’ve come a long way and another celebration is in order.  Since the focus has been on Dr. Seuss since his birthday on March 2nd, the following culminating events will take place next week:

Wednesday, April 17 ~ Wacky WednesdayChildren may come to school in their silliest and wackiest outfits.

YES!!! Mrs. Pearl and Mrs. Rich will have zany outfits on, too.  Wait and see!

Thursday, April 18 ~ Theodore Thursday -  We will read, Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Theodore Geisel (which is Dr. Seuss).   Then we’ll make Oobleck.  Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid.  It acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it.  You can grab it and it will ooze out of your hands….  Fun, Fun, FUN!!!!  Click on the arrow to see the messy-fun concoction that is in store for us.

We will need corn starch and green food coloring for this project.  Open boxes of corn starch are acceptable since oobleck is not edible.  Please send these materials in by Tuesday.  Thank you so muchJ

Reading instruction is a daily practice.  We will review long vowel sounds /A/ and /I/.  Thus far, we’ve been introduced to 42 sight words.   Our goal is to learn all 50 sight words by June.  I am including all 50 sight words in our daily lessons.  Please do the same on the home-front.

Academics is embedded in our Seussian Celebration Activities.  Next week is Review Week.  Look at the collection of photos as we engage in a variety of activites to reinforce and extend skills taught in reading, writing and math.

The Rascals have been writing the daily message using "smartie spelling".  We're hearing lots of letter sounds and understand concepts about print.

YES!  We are most ready for writing....and our journals are proof!   Budding authors and illustrators show off works of art and literacy....

SPIN A SOUND
First sounds of Seuss story characters/objects are recorded while playing Spin - A -Sound during Writing Workshop.....

WORD FAMILIES
Sorting, reading and recording words is a card game we love to play during Book Workshop!

                                 UNSCRAMBLE WORDS
The Rascals approach this challenging activity at the Sensory Table with an
                                                     "I can do it!"  attitude.
Look at the proud smiles on their faces as they dig for eggs in Easter grass, remove magnetic letters, build and read consonant-vowel-consonant words.

                                                                                                          HAPPBIRTHDADSEUS!!

Be on the look-out for birthday cards we decorated during Family Workshop.

INDEPENDENT READERS
After snack the Rascals choose a decodable reader that is a good fit (one they can read independently).  They find a comfortable place to relax while reading to themselves.  We all look forward to this time of day.

                           IMPRESSIVE MATH PROGRESS

Domino Addition ADDS up to more fun during Math Workshop.

We are on a mission to memorize sums of numbers to FIVE.  Many of us need to count on our fingers.  By June, our goal is to memorize addition facts to FIVE. Any practice you can provide at home will support our classroom instruction.  Go Rascals!

                   Our Smarties Embrace Challenge

At this point in the year, knowing the names of 3-D shapes is easy-peasy!
"WONDER" questions inspire us to think....  Do they roll, slide, stack?
Why?  Ask your Rascal.... responses are amazingly sophisticated for a 5-6 year old thinker!!!!
